Comet O’er the Mount

I fell in love with this glass the first time I saw it. It is a mottled bullseye with a smear of brown and white that reminded me of a comet. While I was slumping the piece in my kiln it broke in the shape of the mountain below. I modified it slightly but decided to leave only the accidental crack because it resembled Mt. Helena.

This is my all-time favorite plate (we’ll have to see what March brings!) The detail I achieved in the loon was a pleasant surprise. The elegant combination of this spectrum streaky slate blue/purple and black glass is complimented perfectly by the lustrous cobalt blue color of the antique nickel finish. This plate has such a calm, relaxing feel to it, it instantly reminded me of the dead-calm mornings on the Seeley-Swan.

I was commissioned to create this plate as a retirement gift for the retiring Governor of Montana, Judy Martz. Judy is a turtle fan and I thought the green and white glass worked perfectly for a turtle scene. The model I used was a 300 year old Japanese Sea Turtle that a friend has in a shadow box. The green and white glass is a hand-blown Lamberts (German) flash glass. The turtles are etched on opaque black. I etched the piece with multi-layer sandblasting and detailed dremel work.
